Career aspirations of in-house lawyers

The desire to become a CEO is there for many lawyers, but it’s not for everyone. Some see themselves having the most impact in a leadership role that allows them to shape company strategy, without necessarily carrying the CEO title.

Do in-house lawyers want to be CEO?

The short answer? Not always. Our survey revealed that 39% of in-house legal professionals expressed interest in pursuing a CEO position, while 61% look to other career paths (or prefer to stay where they are). Many see the CEO role as a step too far from the work they value most.

For some, the appeal of a CEO role is clear: influence, strategic decision-making, and the opportunity to shape a company’s future. But others view the job as an overwhelming commitment that takes them away from the legal expertise they spent years building, or feel their skills as a lawyer aren’t recognised for the CEO role.

What do lawyers’ peak roles look like?

For many in-house lawyers, their ideal role isn't just about the title. It’s about having influence, making strategic decisions, and being part of something bigger than just the legal department. Interestingly, some respondents also said that they would rather be a founder and be in the top position in their own private business, rather than someone else’s.

A key theme emerged from the data: General Counsel is the pinnacle of many in-house lawyers’ career aspirations. This role combines legal expertise with a seat at the executive table, offering the best of both worlds – strategic influence while remaining rooted in legal practice.

However, a growing segment of lawyers is redefining what peak career success means. For these lawyers, it’s less about the title and more about finding roles that align with their personal values and desired work-life balance. This means prioritising environments where the company culture feels right or has a strong social impact, even if it means stepping away from the most senior roles.
